The “Commons” and Economic Transformation

James Quilligan

James Quilligan

James Quilligan, distinguished economic consultant and policy advisor to leaders and agencies in 26 countries, joins ZOOM’D for a second round of conversation about the “commons”—a topic central to the new thinking needed to address fatal flaws of our current economic system. James helps to further clarify what is meant by the “commons,” a concept whose importance was acknowledged through the recent Nobel Prize in economics awarded to Elinor Ostrom for ground-breaking work in this area. James describes basic elements involved and characteristics of the “commons,” introduces forms through which local communities can activate management of the “commons,” and distinguishes management of the “commons” from traditional roles of business (private sector) and government (public sector). This conversation furthers the ZOOM’D emphasis on positive and tangible visions for resilient and desirable futures.
